I.China Population and Employment Statistics Yearbook 2014 is an annualstatistical publication, which contains data on basic condition of populationand employment in 2013 as well as for the previous years for the whole nationand 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under theCentral Government. It also includes the relevant data of some other countriesand territories in the world.

II.The yearbook is compiled by the Department of Population andEmployment Statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, andassisted by the Public Order Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security and theDepartment of Planning and Information of the National Health and FamilyPlanning Commission of China.

III.The yearbook contains the following eight chapters: 1.GeneralSurvey; 2.Data from 2013 National Sample Survey on Population Changes; 3.MainData from 2013 Labor Force Survey; 4. Data from Statistics on Employment inUrban Units in 2013; 5.Data from Household Registration in 2013; 6.Data fromFamily Planning Statistics in 2013; 7.Population and Employment Data ofSelected Countries and Territories of the World; 8.Explanatory Notes on MainStatistical Indicators.

IV.The reference time of 2013 National Sample Survey on PopulationChanges and Labor Force was at zero hour on November 1 in 2013. The sample survey adopted multi-stage systematic PPEScluster sampling scheme,taking the whole nation as the population and each province,autonomous region or municipality as sub-population. A total of 1.12 millionpeople were selected from 4791 survey districts in 4387 townships (towns orstreet committees) in 2101 counties (cities or districts) of the 31 provinces,autonomous regions and municipalities. The weighted estimation procedure suggestedthat the birth rate was 12.08 per thousand,the death rate was 7.16 per thousand and the natural growth rate was4.92 per thousand for China in 2013. Based on these rates, it was furtherestimated that Chinahad a total population of 1,360.72 million at the end of 2013, with 16.40million births, 9.72 million deaths and a net increase of 6.68 million peopleduring the year. Except table 2-1 and table 2-2, the rest of tabulations inChapter Two were sample data. The sampling fraction for the nation was 0.822per thousand.

V.The population data of Chapter Two in the yearbook are from 2013National Sample Survey on Population Changes, and those of Chapter Five arefrom the household registration, which use different definitions and datacollection methods. Users should notice that the data under the same or similarheading in these two chapters may be different.

VI.The national data in the yearbook do not include that of Hong KongSpecial Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiwan Province.

VII.Notations used in the yearbook:

(blank space)indicates that the figure is not large enough to be measured with the smallestunit in the table, or data are unknown or are not available; “#” indicates amajor breakdown of the total.
